April 20 & 21, 2007 will mark the 21st edition of Ice Horizons. Ice Horizons is a bi-annual Ice skating production involving the Bowling Green Skating Club members and special guest skaters in a full show production. Ice Horizons helps promote the art, craft and sport of figure skating among the youth and adults of Northwest Ohio with the production of a full-scale ice show.
Ice Horizons comes together with the help of over 100 volunteers. These workers help in such areas as sets/scenery design and construction of props, show program design, advertising and sponsorships, costume design and production, special effects, ticket sales, ushers, publicity, concessions, ticket takers, junior club organizers, and many more behind the scenes areas.
The first Ice Horizons Show was March 29, 1968 at the newly opened Bowling Green State University Ice Arena. This show was directed by David and Rita Lowery, formerly of Holiday on Ice, who came to Bowling Green from Troy, Ohio to help start the Bowling Green Skating Club. At the beginning there was a show every year, until after the 1971 show, when it was determined due to the scope and cost of the production, a bi-annual show would help improve the quality of the event.
A show committee is formed a year before the event to start the planning and the selection process for show director. This show committee works closely with the Bowling Green Skating Club, in working with local skaters participating in the show.
All skaters in Ice Horizons must be members of the Bowling Green Skating Club and the United States Figure Skating Association.
Ice Horizons has grown over the years, becoming widely known as one of the finest amateur ice shows produced by a skating club in the United States. Past shows have also included some of the most famous ice skaters in America. They include:
Janet Lynn in 1970
Lynn Nightingale in 1977
